June 6, 1944
We were awakened at midnight. Briefed at 0130 and found out that today is “ D “ DAY. 11,000 American and British are to hit the coast before the wave of landing barges. Bombs had to be away by 0722 because the invading would be hitting the beaches 2 minutes later.
Our target was Arromanches on the coast. Bombed from 14,000 feet. Saw no flak nor fighters. Takeoff was 0430 and bombs were away on time. Dropped 38 – 100 lb. G.P. bombs. We were scheduled for another mission this afternoon but it was scrubbed.
MISSION # 10 COMPLETED.
Editor's Notes: The official 398th Mission for 6 June 1944 in the morning was to Courseulles, France. Arromanches, France is about 2 miles west of Courseulles.
